Leaf Seed Berry Skincare: First Impressions

I came across Leaf Seed Berry (LSB) on Instagram and immediately fell in love with their packaging. They have some of the most adorable product labels I’ve ever seen. The products themselves also seem like they’re packed with some unique ingredients. I mean how often can you find a moisturizing cream that has hyaluronic acid, Centella Asiatica, green tea, aloe, AND spirulina? I couldn’t justify a whole skincare haul though since I’m trying to work through my current stash by expanding my routine.

Along came their Valentine’s day sale and I couldn’t resist hopping on their Etsy page to place an order. I came across the bestseller sampler set of minis and it was the perfect way to try a good range of their products without adding to my skincare stash too much. Here’s everything I got in the set:

  • Green Apple Essence Exfoliating Toner
  • Organic Lavender Cleansing Oil and Makeup Remover
  • Mermaid Cream Hyaluronic Marine Face Moisturizer
  • Perfect Ten Protect & Perfect Facial Serum
  • Vanilla Infused Jojoba Oil
  • Charcoal + Tea Tree Gel Face Cleanser
  • Three Tea Cream Face Cleanser

The Toner:

I picked the Green Apple version since I was still reeling from having run out of a really great green apple serum. I believe it was a good choice since it smelled delicious! It smells exactly like apple juice and even kind of tastes like it (I sprayed some into my mouth on accident. I do not recommend doing this. Tastes like apple juice mixed with something bitter and disgusting.) It’s a decent toner but leaves a sticky film behind. I didn’t notice any significant effects (good or bad) while using this. It did not sting like other exfoliating toners do probably since the strength is a lot lower than others that use chemicals besides naturally-derived stuff. The ingredients list on this looks pretty great and if you’re into green beauty, I would definitely recommend trying out sample sizes of a few of the toners to find your favorite. They have strawberry, rose, lavender, tea tree and rosemary too besides the green apple kind.

Ingredients: Green apple essence water, willow bark extract, organic chamomile extract, silk amino acids, organic licorice root extract, green tea extract, organic goji berry extract, organic ginger root extract, Leucidal Liquid (radish root ferment filtrate [certified organic preservative])   -from the LSB website.

The Cleansing Oil:

Now, this was a product I was really looking forward to trying. I was in need of an oil-based cleanser and was hoping this would work well. This was also the most disappointing product in the set. It was a heavy oil; difficult to spread and massage around the face to cleanse. The oil claims it can remove makeup but I would say it can only move around makeup. It can take off most powder and cream products but has some issues with mascara and eyeliner. The viscous texture of the oil also makes it unpleasant to rub around the eyes to take off makeup. Once it had dissolved the makeup, I added some water to wash it off since most cleansing oils will emulsify and wash off taking the makeup and dirt along with them. However, this oil does not emulsify and just gets stickier. This made sense as soon as I looked at the ingredients. There are no emulsifiers or anything except oils to help dissolve and wash it off. I ended up having to use a washcloth and some foaming cleanser to scrub it off. This is one of the few products I would not recommend at all from the set.

Ingredients: Organic sunflower oil, organic borage seed oil, organic argan oil, grapefruit seed oil, organic jojoba oil, organic pumpkin seed oil, lavender essential oil, vitamin e, rosemary leaf extract.

The Mermaid Cream:

This is the star product of the brand. While most mermaid themed products nowadays simply add a ton of holographic glitter to an otherwise dull product, this cream is truly unique. No glitter and nothing messy. The cream gets its name from the “Ocean Mineral Complex” (not sure what that is) and other hydrating ingredients. It has a promising ingredient list and it delivers! I used this cream after dermarolling a few times and it felt very luxurious and hydrating. Not greasy or heavy on the skin at all! It’s a great moisturizer and I would repurchase a full size jar.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Leaf Juice, Water, Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, Organic Sunflower Oil, Isopropyl Palmitate, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Shea Butter, Organic Jojoba Oil, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Vitamin E, Sea Water Extract (Ocean Mineral Complex), Organic Green Tea Extract, Goji Berry Extract, Yarrow Extract, Irish Moss Extract, Spirulina Extract, Organic Gotu Kola Extract, Horsetail Extract, Wild Geranium Extract, Organic Dandelion Extract, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

The Perfect Ten Serum:

This is a creamy serum that feels light and hydrating despite the thick consistency. The little sample bottle was tiny and it was really hard to get the product. The dropper doesn’t really work for it since the serum is too thick for a dropper. I really enjoyed using it and would repurchase if I’m in a place where I can’t find another serum I’m excited about at that moment.

Ingredients: Rose Flower Water, Organic Aloe Leaf Juice, Emulsifying Wax, Vegetable Glycerin, DMAE Bitartrate, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Vitamin E, Soybean Oil, Vitamin C (Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate), Carrot Seed Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Coenzyme Q10, Provitamin A (Beta Carotene), Vitamin A Palmitate, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Provitamin B5, Vitamin B3, Goji Berry Extract, Organic Sugar Cane Extract, Organic Bilberry Fruit Extract, Organic Sugar Maple Extract, Organic Orange Peel Extract, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Organic Cranberry Fruit Extract, Alcohol, Castor Oil, Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Tetrasodium EDTA

The Infused Jojoba Oil:

I picked the vanilla bean infused variety since I was going through a phase of loving all vanilla scented candles. Other options for this oil include Chamomile, Ginger-Turmeric, Frankincense, Sweet Meadow and Lavender. I was very excited about the vanilla infusion but turns out it didn’t really smell much like vanilla. The jojoba oil is supposed to help hydrate and soothe your skin while being non-comedogenic and non-greasy. It was, in fact, hydrating but I don’t think it was non-greasy. Oils can be really hard to formulate so I tend to stick to just a few selected oils that I know I love. I like oils that are as light as possible so I wasn’t the biggest fan of this one. However, I think anyone who already likes jojoba oil would like these since they add a few extra benefits by infusing them but it’s basically just jojoba oil.

Ingredients: Organic jojoba oil infused with organic vanilla beans. That’s it!

Charcoal + Tea Tree Gel Cleanser:

This was another one of the stand-out products from this set. I loved this cleanser and used it up so fast. My skin hasn’t reacted well to charcoal or tea tree cleansers in the past so I was shocked that this cleanser didn’t cause any acne/breakouts. It cleans well and doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry. You can see the little charcoal particles in it which is a fun little detail. Charcoal cleansers have been a trend for about a year now and if you’re looking to try some out, this is a great option!

Ingredients: Aloe Vera Juice, Cocamidopropyl Betaine (From Coconut), Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Sodium Olefin Sulfunate, Tea Tree Essential Oil, Activated Charcoal, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Vitamin E

Three Tea Creamy Cleanser:

This product smells amazing! I loved the scent, texture, packaging and everything about this product. I wanted to love the effects of it too but unfortunately something about it didn’t work for my skin. It kind of makes sense since the two cleansers have completely different ingredients and something in this ingredient list breaks me out. Before the breakouts started though, the cleanser was absolutely wonderful to use.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Leaf Juice, Extracts of Organic Rooibos, Organic Green Tea (and) Organic White Tea, Organic Olive Oil, Goji Berry Extract, Emulsifying Wax NF, Glycerin, Methylsulfonylmethane [MSM], Dimethylaminoethanol [DMAE], Vitamin E, Organic Neem Seed Oil, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Retinyl Palmitate [Vitamin A], Ascorbyl Palmitate [Vitamin C Ester], Panthenol [Pro-Vitamin B5], Xanthan Gum

The Best:

  • Mermaid Cream
  • Charcoal + Tea Tree Cleanser
  • Perfect Ten Serum
  • Three Tea Cleanser (didn’t work for me but I think it will for others!)

I really like this brand! It’s a really cute indie brand and you can tell a lot of work has gone into the products. The brand owner is really kind and interacts with all her customers on Instagram. She’s great at answering questions about the products and the website and takes feedback seriously. Even though over half these products didn’t work with me, I think the sampler served its purpose of helping me try a little bit of every category and decide what I like. I’ve found a winner in the Mermaid Cream. I’m glad I tried the three tea cleanser in this set because I was about to buy the full size. Now I know that as much as I love the experience of using this cleanser, my skin isn’t a fan of it. Overall, I think it’s worth it to try the sample sizes of products that interest you from Leaf Seed Berry and then decide which ones you want to invest in. When a product works, it’s great!
